Christmas

The Salvation Army provides services year round, but we're most visible at Christmas. Each year we provide special assistance to thousands of families in Central Ohio. A variety of programs provide food, clothing and toys to those without the financial resources to meet many of their basic needs.

Our three primary programs are:

Christmas Cheer (Large-scale food and toy distribution at Fairgrounds, supported by food drives and toy drives)
Angel Tree (Specific type of toy drive where toys are purchased for certain ages and genders)
Adopt-A-Family (Groups and companies can purchase gifts for a specific family)

One of more important fundraisers is our annual Christmas Kettle Campaign . Learn more about this century-old tradition, and why your participation is so important. If you wish to ring a bell this year, please complete our Volunteer Sign-Up Form, then return here to read our Kettle Tutorial.

Group Holiday Opportunities

As the holiday season approaches, individuals and businesses look for ways to help those in our community who are less fortunate.  There are several ways local businesses, individuals and media outlets can partner with The Salvation Army to help spread a little “Christmas Cheer” and make a difference in the lives of thousands of individuals. Download our 2007 Christmas Brochure (4.3MB PDF) for details and ideas.

Christmas Cheer

The Christmas Cheer program is a food and toy distribution program where families receive a Christmas Dinner food box which includes a turkey, stuffing, potatoes, apples, corn, milk, butter, yams, applesauce and cookies.  It also includes a toy for every child under the age of 12. In 2006, The Salvation Army collected almost 23,000 new toys and assisted nearly 6,000 families through our Adopt-a-Family and Christmas Cheer programs.

Holiday food drives and toy drives help us provide enough food and safe toys for our Central Ohio families. Any group, church, synagogue, mosque, organization, club or business can organize a food drive or toy drive, whether it be a one-day effort, or a month-long collection. Call Alice Hohl at 437-2138 for more information.

We also recruit 1,500 volunteers to set up and orchestrate the giant assembly line at the Ohio Expo Center. See our Volunteer Letter for specific information on 2007 Christmas volunteer opportunities, including Christmas Cheer.

Who is eligible: Any individual or family living in the Columbus area.

Angel Tree

The Angel Tree program gives people the opportunity to purchase a new toy for a needy child at Christmas time.  Christmas trees are displayed in local stores, churches and businesses.  The trees are covered with tags that display a child's age and toy.  Anyone can choose a tag from the tree and fill that order by purchasing a toy and placing it under the tree.  A Salvation Army representative then collects the toys and distributes them through the Christmas Cheer program.

Retail locations: Angel Trees are found at the following retail locations

Wal-mart at Tuttle Crossing
Andersons General Store on Federated Blvd
Cracker Barrel Hilliard
Cracker Barrel Pickerington
Wal-mart at Stringtown
Big Lots at Stringtown
Damon's Grille - Polaris Pkwy

Adopt-A-Family

The Adopt-A-Family program matches individual or group sponsors with a family who has experienced circumstances which have made it difficult or impossible for the caregivers to provide Christmas for the family.  Families are only "Adopted" once in a lifetime.  The sponsors provide Christmas gifts from a wish list compiled by the family.

Who is eligible: Families to be "adopted" are identified by Salvation Army case workers.  Families must not have benefitted from the program previously.

How to be a sponsor: Sponsors can be individuals, churches, families, small businesses, large corporations or any group or organization.  If you are interested, please contact us at Info@salvationarmycolumbus.org.

Program dates: Families are identified during the months of October and November.  Sponsors are provided with the family's wish list during the same time period.  Sponsors deliver the gifts for their family to a Salvation Army facility the second week of December.
