Press Release
New Worthington Woods church impacting community after just one year
Salvation Army church’s new building provides basketball league, youth programs, food pantry, Spanish-language services, and a safe haven for an area school
Worthington, Ohio Sept. 25 – The Chapel at Worthington Woods, a ministry of The Salvation Army in Greater Columbus, has made a big impression on the community in the short year since its new building has been open at the corner of Sancus and Worthington Woods. Last October, the church and social service center moved from a rented storefront into a beautiful new facility, and already its rooms are filled with community residents and their children, playing, learning, worshiping and serving others.
Nearby Slate Hill Elementary has even designated the building as its “safe haven” in case of evacuation. Planned additions include an after school program, a senior program, and Hispanic ministry that includes Spanish-language worship as well as English classes for community residents.
Although many observers may think the Worthington and North Columbus area is affluent, the Chapel at Worthington Woods hosts a mix of residents, including many who need assistance. The food pantry here is just as busy as the one The Salvation Army provides on the near east side of Columbus.
An anniversary celebration will be Saturday Oct. 13 8am-11am, including a free Pancake Breakfast, and celebration concert will be held at 7pm.
Media tours of the facility are available, plus interviews with the pastor and staff.
