Food pantries need volunteers

New “Choice Pantry” model lets residents shop for food they will really use; requires more volunteers

Columbus, Ohio Sept. 19, 2007 – The Salvation Army in Greater Columbus is changing the way food pantries work, and the new model means we need more volunteers to help Columbus residents. The Army recently converted its food pantries to the Choice Pantry model. Before, families would come to the pantry and receive a box or bags of food, mostly nonperishable items. Families didn’t have a choice about what food they received, and unfamiliar items may have gone to waste. With the new system, people can enter the pantry by appointment and shop for the items they like and are likely to use at home, cooking for their families.

The food is organized according to the Food Pyramid, with a color coded system. Families may choose a number of items from each category, based on the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA).

The Salvation Army in Greater Columbus operates food pantries on the West Side (West Mound) in North Columbus (Worthington Woods) in Linden (Northern Lights area) and at our local headquarters on East Main Street in Columbus.

The new system means more donated food (not just lima beans and spam!) and volunteers to assist families through the pantry, checking off the number of items in each category and helping them substitute fresh produce for canned items, when fresh produce is available.

For more information, Call Alice Hohl at 437-2138

Media tours of the pantries are available, plus interviews with volunteers and possibly a client.
