Salvation Army toy collections/donations complicated by toy recalls
Workers sorting toys and pulling recalled models; donors encouraged to be mindful of toy recalls.
Columbus, Ohio Oct. 15, 2007– The Salvation Army in Greater Columbus is working hard to ensure all the toys distributed to thousands of needy families this Christmas are safe. Several rounds of toy recalls this year have complicated the Army’s efforts to help local families have a joyful Christmas.
Salvation Army workers are already beginning to comb through the toys already in storage to eliminate unsafe items. Workers are also encouraging those who are donating toys to purchase them at reputable stores that have removed unsafe toys from the shelves. There is some concern that people may try to donate recalled toys, rather than taking them back to the store. The Salvation Army is asking its generous supporters to keep in mind that the people who need our help have fewer resources than most (time, Web access, transportation) to check the safety of toys and return them.
Salvation Army locations across the country are taking the following steps to ensure the safety of toys distributed at Christmas, as well as in their Thrift Stores.
- New in-store signage warning parents and shoppers about the recall and directing them to the manufacturer's web site
- Calls for new volunteers to help sort toys at our facilities
- Ongoing collaboration with the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission to be aware of any recalls for toys and other items
